The Silva Method

Paper can be copied. So can an app. The Silva Method is something else: a complete system for gathering what matters, from your daily plan to a family chronicle, a cookbook and the rules you live by. The tools only carry it. It works because everything connects into one whole, and nothing gets lost.

A complete system. Three layers, one whole.

  1. Paper. A4 day card. Written by hand, no screen.
  2. App. The same layout, 1:1. Searches, counts, remembers.
  3. Method. From values to tasks. Every day has a result.

Control over your life starts with a day aligned with what matters.

  1. Morning: Compass. You set what this day is for and what it must deliver.
  2. Choice: 5 wins. Your intent becomes five tasks that decide a won day.Power List, Andy Frisella
  3. Order: A, B, C. The rest falls in line: A must happen today, B should, C can wait.
  4. Evening: review. ✓ done, → moved, × dropped; Compass, reflection and gratitude tell you what to change tomorrow.
  5. Week and month: Index. Key notes go into the Index with date and number, and the lessons return to the morning Compass.

The loop closes: evening feeds tomorrow, week and month feed direction.

See how it works

Notes and tasks that never get lost.

  1. Write it numbered. Every note of the day gets a number, and a time if needed: “1. 9:30 call with the bank”.
  2. Mark the kind. ☐ task · • information · * idea, so you see at a glance what needs doing.
  3. Link and move. A task points to a note “(N3)” or a note from another day “(13.10 N3)”; unfinished work gets “→ 18.10” and returns on that day. Nothing falls through.
  4. The Index finds it years later. Key notes go into the month's Index, in their week's row: day, keyword, reference. The app searches every volume.
Work blocks.

Slice the day your way: hours, quarters or 6 minutes.

Paper and app: both ways.

Every page carries a marker, so the app knows which day and which card it is. Take a photo and your notes, tasks and statuses land in the app [coming soon]. The other way: work in the app, print the day and clip it into your binder (Level 3).

Origins

Nothing starts from scratch. Our world was shaped by moments of great courage and brilliant discoveries born in the very heart of Europe – from the Victory of Vienna and Solidarity breaking the evil empire, to groundbreaking innovations without which our everyday life would not exist. That is where the Copernican revolution came from, Skłodowska-Curie's double Nobel, the breaking of the Enigma cipher and the Czochralski method, which gave rise to today's smartphones and microprocessors. When wars rolling through the centuries burned state archives, it was in homes that a unique phenomenon was born: silva rerum (Latin for ‘forest of things’) – multi-generational private books of miscellany, guarding both great ideas and everyday wisdom against oblivion. Today this noble tradition returns as a modern, international system for planning and archiving, which pulls your plans and sudden flashes of genius out of the chaos of digital noise and turns them into a lasting legacy for future generations.

Origins

Nothing starts from scratch. Our modern world was shaped by moments when the course of history depended on the courage and vision of individuals. It was in the lands at the heart of Europe that the fate of the continent hung in the balance: at Vienna in 1683, where a mighty onslaught was halted, and on the Vistula in 1920, when Europe was defended against the Bolshevik march westward. From there came the largest Underground State of the Second World War, and the nation that saved the most human lives from the Holocaust – in a reality where the slightest gesture of humanity was punishable by the immediate death of an entire family. From the same longing for freedom the Solidarity movement was born, becoming the spark that shattered the twentieth-century evil empire.

Alongside great history, a revolution of human genius was unfolding. Did you know that this is where innovations come from that quietly shaped our everyday lives? Nicolaus Copernicus stopped the Sun and moved the Earth, changing the way we look at the cosmos. Maria Skłodowska-Curie, the only woman in history to win two Nobel Prizes in two different natural sciences, discovered polonium and radium.

The world you know draws on these discoveries at every step:

  • In your pocket: Jan Czochralski developed the crystal-growth method without which today's microprocessors, smartphones and computers would not exist.
  • For your safety: Kazimierz Żegleń and Jan Szczepanik created the first bulletproof vest, and Józef Kosacki built the mine detector that saved lives on front lines around the world.
  • In your home: Kazimierz Funk discovered and named vitamins, and Ignacy Łukasiewicz gave humanity the kerosene lamp and the first oil refinery, igniting the era of the modern oil industry.
  • In global communication: Henryk Magnuski created the first portable walkie-talkie radio, and three brilliant mathematicians broke the Enigma cipher, shortening the nightmare of the Second World War.

Through centuries of turbulent history, these great ideas and secrets of genius were under threat. Invaders burned archives, plundered libraries and erased traces of identity. Then homes became the refuge. It was there, in the days of the old Commonwealth, that a unique phenomenon was born: silva rerum (Latin for ‘forest of things’). These were multi-generational private books of miscellany. Everything was written in them – from state manifestos and breakthrough scientific thought to personal memoirs and everyday wisdom. A similar instinct to protect one's roots can be found in other great cultures of the world: the Chinese have their jiapu, and the Japanese their kakeizu.

Today Silva Rerum returns as a modern, international system.

It is a tool made for anyone, at any latitude, who wants to pull their life out of the chaos of digital noise. Your daily plans, sudden flashes of genius and deepest reflections come together into a coherent, lasting archive. Your personal monument and a trace for future generations. True culture demands regularity – because it is from the daily attentiveness of individuals that the collective memory of the whole world is built.

Your data is yours. Encrypted on your device, not even we can read it. Export always, on every plan.

How we protect your journal

  • You encrypt it yourself. Your journal is locked on your device before it is stored anywhere. We only ever receive encrypted bytes.
  • You hold the key. You open the journal with the password from your journal card. In case you lose it, you get 3 one-time recovery codes. Keep them separately.
  • Without your password and codes, we cannot recover your journal. We hold no spare key. That is the price of privacy, chosen on purpose.
  • Today your journal lives only on your device. An encrypted cloud copy comes later [coming soon].
  • You can always take it with you. Export to JSON and plain text, on every plan, readable without Silva Rerum.
  • No one looks in without your consent. Not family members, not a bot, not modules. A bot or module gets only what you allow, until you revoke it [coming soon].

For technical readers

  • Suite SR-SUITE-1: Argon2id (RFC 9106; t = 3, p = 4, m = 64 MiB), HKDF-SHA-256, XChaCha20-Poly1305, X25519. Libraries: libsodium (WASM) and @noble/hashes; tested against RFC/NIST vectors.
  • Keys: password → Argon2id → wrapping key → random journal master key (256-bit) → HKDF → separate content, index and metadata keys; each object has its own random key.
  • Where the key lives: by default only in the browser tab's memory, so you enter the password on every open. “Remember on this device” (off by default) keeps a non-extractable AES-GCM key in IndexedDB.
  • What the server sees (once sync launches) [coming soon]: account and journal IDs, write times, opaque object IDs and versions, SHA-256 checksums, sizes padded to buckets, encrypted key wraps. Never content or passwords. Database: PostgreSQL with RLS (deny by default, own data only), append-only writes.
  • Key loss: recovery works with your password or one of your codes (each code is single-use). Without them, the data cannot be restored. More paths (k-of-n key splitting, device pairing, succession) [coming soon].
  • Export: JSON (1:1 import) and plain text, always available.
  • What we don't promise: the browser version protects against whoever stores the data and against disk access, but not against code being swapped by whoever serves it. Code integrity (SRI, self-hosting) [coming soon]. An unlocked browser profile with “remember” on opens the journal.

Who it's for

Silva Rerum isn't for everyone. Nor does it try to be.

It's for you if:

  • you plan your day before it plans you;
  • you write by hand because that's how you think best;
  • you want your decisions to leave a record, not just a result.

It's not for you if:

  • you're looking for yet another free to-do app;
  • you expect the system to do the work for you;
  • you think all of this is too much.

Then a plain notebook will do. The stationery shop is around the corner.
